William Ernest Garside's Obituary
William Ernest Garside, November 30, 1941 to July 7, 2022
William Ernest Garside, son of Lela Auldean Reece-Garside and Hilton Lorenzo Garside, was born on November 30, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the oldest of seven children born to the couple and then two step-brothers, added later in life. The first three children, Bill, Bob and Bonnie were all born on November 30, in different years. They became Salt Lake City's "celebrities" in their youth. The seven children are William/Bill, Robert/Bob, Bonita/Bonnie, Blair, Brent, Bette Jane and Sandra.
Bill passed on July 7, 2022, at his home, of natural causes. He was a loveable, friendly and engaging man! Bill was known to his siblings as "The Protector", a role he personified all of his professional career as a Security Guard, and in his life. Bill joined the Air Force just shy of his 20th birthday, in 1961. He was in Basic Training, where he was honorably discharged due to medical issues with his feet. His time in the military and his career as a security guard were very important to him.
Bill married Sharla Lee Soderstrom-Garside and they produced two children, Donnetta B (deceased) and Valeda Chris Garside. After they divorced Bill met and married Bette Mentor-Garside, and fathered a son, Marcus Ernest Garside, who now resides in Wisconsin. That couple also divorced and in his later years, he met and befriended Janet Kenyon (Jan). The formed a deep friendship that lasted for several decades and homes together, until Jan's untimely passing a year or so ago. Since then Bill has been living alone with the assistance of the Veteran's Administration and Jan's neice, Deanne Mosher. Deanne, her husband Luis and her family have cared for and welcomed Bill into their lives. He truly loved and cared for all of them!
Bill is survived by his two living children, Valeda (Melissa) of Oregon and Marcus of Wisconsin. He also has outlived three of his younger siblings, Bonita (Dewayne) Martin, Blair and Sandra. He is preceded in death by both parents, Robert, Brent, and Bette Jean.
In his apartment complex he was a friend to many. Several individuals have expressed their condolences at his passing. He is fondly remembered by many and will be missed as a daily part of our lives!
