NEWS: Valley West area MURDER SUSPECT in ARCATA, California and arrested Friday and RELEASED, Saturday, October 18th 2025
VALLEY WEST area of Arcata – A man identified as Rhett Alexander Walker was booked into jail on Friday, Oct. 17, 2025, by the Arcata Police Department, according to Humboldt County booking logs.
Walker was arrested at 3:04 p.m. by Officer Villareal. He faces one felony charge of PC187(a): Murder, according to the jail records.
APD Lt. Luke Scown confirmed that Walker’s arrest is connected to the death of a woman reported early Friday morning near a homeless encampment in the 4700 block of Valley West Boulevard.
Walker had been arrested Oct. 15 for providing false identification to a police officer.
Scown said officers discovered a female victim who was killed sometime overnight between Thursday and Friday. Scown said then that police were speaking with a person of interest, who was also homeless, and emphasized that there was no danger to the wider public.
Monday morning, Scown said the matter was still under investigation and no further information was currently available.

Rhett Alexander Walker, the man named by Arcata police as a suspect in the Valley West homicide, was released from the Humboldt County jail on Saturday evening just after 8 p.m.
The reason cited in the Humboldt County jail reports for Walker’s release is PC 849(b)(1), or “insufficient grounds for making a criminal complaint against the person arrested.”
The Arcata Police Department did not immediately return a call seeking clarification in the case on Tuesday.
“We don’t have any reason to believe that the general public is at any increased risk or danger in connection with this incident,” Arcata police Lt. Luke Scown said and noted that it is an active investigation.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, which also includes the coroner’s office, declined to answer questions about the identity of the woman who was found dead, when her autopsy is scheduled or her cause of death.
“At this point, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office will not (be) answering any questions regarding APD’s case,” HCSO spokesperson Erin Inskip told the Times-Standard, referring it back to the Arcata Police Department.
It’s worth noting that the Arcata Police Department referred this reporter to the coroner’s office for information about the autopsy and cause of death.
