I was working at a Circuit City just a day after the loss of my Grandma Vera. We had been very close and I must have not hid well, my despair.
Then...there he was. Max. I remember his small frame and his smile. I walked over to him and he grabbed my hand.
Its been so long I can't remember what he said at first but he expressed to me how he knew I needed him right then.
We talked back and forth for well over an hour. He wanted me to know how to get the most out of life. He had direction and answers.
When a customer needed something we would pause our exchange momentarily. I noticed that Max was scribbling on a piece of paper while he waited for me. Once when I returned to him he demanded I try and push him off his stance.
"Move me. Go ahead. Try."
Reluctantly and softly I pushed.
"No, come on. Really try and move me."
The more I tried to move him, the more I realized he wasn't moving. It was pretty amazing seeing an 85 year old in such great shape, but it all had greater meaning. He left with me the paper he was scribbling on. I kept it in my wallet with me everyday since. Thank you Max. I am STILL learning from our short visit together all those years ago.
I will never forget you "1/2 Guru" Hahaha.
With gratitude,
