Ieremia "JR" Unasa's Obituary
Ieremia "JR" Unasa, 39, passed away on March 4, 2025, in Murray, Utah.
Born on April 16, 1985, in Pago Pago, American Samoa, JR was the beloved son of Sitivi (Steve) and Niutoua (Mua) Unasa. He spent his early years in Samoa before moving to Hawaii and later to Alaska. It was in Alaska that he met Diane, with whom he built a family. Together, they welcomed three children—Niko, Milo, and Delila. Over the years, JR and his family lived in Alaska, Washington, and eventually Utah. Though he and Diane later parted ways, his love for his children remained steadfast.
JR was known for his strong work ethic and generous spirit. He worked in the construction industry in Washington before transitioning to a role as a security guard. No matter where life took him, JR found joy in helping others whenever he could. His kindness and willingness to lend a hand left a lasting impact on those around him.
Despite facing challenges with mental illness throughout his life, JR remained a striving Christian with an unshakable faith and a heart full of love. His infectious laughter and warm presence brought light to every gathering. He cherished time with family and was always the life of the party—especially when celebrating birthdays. His tradition of singing the birthday song in Samoan at full volume made each person feel truly special on their day.
JR is survived by his children Niko, Milo, and Delila; their mother Diane; his mother Mua; brothers Mia (Bobbi), Steve (Faauiao), Lorenzo (Tina), Leroy, and Ene; sisters Charolette, Belinda (Maligi), Faaleleiga (Ian), and Tamara (Lefty); as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his father Sitivi (Steve), sister Caroline, and his grandparents.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 6745 West 3800 South in West Valley City, Utah. His final resting place will be near his children in Washington State.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who cared for JR throughout his life—those who supported him through struggles and celebrated with him during joyful times. Though he is gone too soon, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
