Darell Ray Cowlishaw's Obituary
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Darell Ray Cowlishaw, son, grandson, father, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, who left us too soon. Darell departed this world on February 1st, 2024, finding solace and rest from the struggles he battled in this life.
Born to Sandra Lee Cowlishaw and Preston Langenegger on September 25th, 1985, Darell leaves behind his son Ben, brother Tarl Preston Langenegger (Crystal & sons), nieces Ehleara and Aurora (his “best friend”), mother Sandy, father Preston, uncle Gordon Cowlishaw, uncle Kelly (Sue) Cowlishaw, grandmother Marcia Cowlishaw, cousins Kristi (Jared), Mary (Andrew), and Dennis. Plus, many more extended family members, friends, and coworkers whom Darell loved.
Darell grew up with his little brother, Tarl, and they formed an unbreakable bond, having seen each other through both hardship and good times. Like true brothers, they fought hard and loved hard. Grandfather Dennis and grandmother Marcia provided a steadfast presence in his life, offering a home filled with unconditional love and support. Uncle “Gordy” stood as a father figure, guiding him, teaching him to fish, the love of hockey, the value of hard work, and loyalty to family. Darell loved his son, Ben, tremendously. Although Darell faced challenges in life, he fought hard to be in a better position to father him correctly. It was always on his mind, and he was striving to uplift himself for his son. Ben, your father loves you more than you know. Darell had an excellent relationship with his bereaved mother, Sandy, who was also his close friend and confidant. They share a Slipknot tattoo and have been there for each other through thick and thin. Whether hanging out with friends and family or rocking out at a live concert, Darell and Sandy enjoyed each other’s company and remained close. Sandy is grief-stricken.
Darell loved street art and tagging (his tag, “Tripto”), death metal, heavy metal, live concerts (Lamb of God, Mastodon, Ghost), his Grizzlies hockey team, Colorado Avalanche, and most of all, his Utah Jazz. Darell loved his job and was proud to work as building security at the Delta Center at Jazz games and more. Darell was quick to make his friends and loved ones smile and enjoy a good laugh.
Darell was not one for religious platitudes or flowery remembrances. He lived genuinely, embracing his true self without reservation. His journey was not without its barriers; through them, he demonstrated his individuality and authentic self.
In lieu of traditional ceremonies, we will celebrate Darell’s life in a manner befitting his spirit—a night of music, art, and memories. Details will be shared with his friends and family.
Darell was preceded in death by his grandfather Dennis Lowe Cowlishaw, a stalwart figure who gave Darell direction, meaning, and love - Darell sorely missed him; and Alexandria “Kat” Kathee Behunin, whom he never stopped loving and missing - she was a light in the darkness. Darell, we hope you are with your beloved Kat, Gramps, and little Penni-dog.
In memory of Darell, we ask that those who wish to honor his legacy do so by supporting local street artists and arts and fostering the creativity and expression he valued deeply.
Darell, may you find peace and freedom on your next adventure. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Your spirit lives on in your son, Ben; your mother, Sandy; your brother, Tarl; your uncle, Gordon; and your grandmother, Marcia, along with all who had the pleasure of knowing you. Rest easy - till we meet again.
