Unfortunately I learned of Scott’s death two days after the Viewing and thus missed visiting with Laurie and Scott’s brothers and sisters. Having lived on 1200 East directly across the street from the Van Dam parent’s house for 55 years, Shanna and I have many memories of Scott and Laurie and their kids plus the whole Van Dam family. In fact, Scott’s Dad, Bob, was the first one in the neighborhood to visit us right after we moved into our house in July of 1966. I remember Scott as one of the very active Van Dam boys. Even as a boy it was obvious that, being a Van Dam, he knew how to fix things - first bikes and lawnmowers and then cars and trucks plus whatever kinds of equipment he used in his tree business. I believe he was a member of the Granite High swim team, which speaks well of his energy to participate in a demanding sport just for the fun of it. When Scott and Laurie lived across the street from us while their kids were little there was always lots going on in addition to the tree business. There are two trees that make me think of Scott. One is the huge evergreen I hired him to cut down because it had been planted too close to our house. Another is the tree, he called it a green ash, that he planted it in his front yard. As I remember he brought it from a job site and planted it, almost as an experiment. That beautiful tree is still there, vigorous, tall and spread out wide. Each fall it drops all of is leaves very quickly, almost in a single day. I can see that tree from my living room window and just the other day as I looked at it, now bare of leaves in winter, I thought about Scott who planted it so many years ago. I think of that as memorial tree for him, one that he planted himself. Shanna and I offer our condolences to you, Laurie, and the entire family. We wish we would have seen the obituary sooner so we could have visited with you. Gary Blake
